The Greater Meriden Council of Catholic Women is hosting Stations of the Cross at 12 noon at St. Stanislaus chapel, St. Faustina Church. This event is well-received, especially by those who prefer daytime participation. GMCCW members take turns leading the service as part of our Lenten Mission. All are welcome.

The Greater Meriden Council of Catholic Women recently completed its annual May rosary devotion at the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady Queen of Angels, on the Mt. Carmel campus in Meriden, Connecticut. Throughout May, the Month of Mary, members gathered every Wednesday at noon to pray the rosary and seek peace in the world. The council also continues this tradition each October during the Month of the Rosary.

On May 11, 2026, OLOF CCW held its General Meeting, beginning with a barbecue dinner and a blessing from Deacon Leon before the meal. Following the meeting, members gathered in candlelight to pray the Living Rosary, led by Anne Brady. Each participant held a red rose and a candle during the prayer service. Afterward, the group processed to the Our Lady of Fatima statue, where they presented the red roses along with white lilies in honor of Mary and in remembrance of the anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13. The evening concluded with everyone singing Immaculate Mary together before beginning the summer break.

Our Lady of the Ozarks PCCW hosted a Women’s Day of Reflection on Saturday, May 9, featuring Bishop Emeritus John Liebrecht and Lynn Melendez, Director of Evangelization, Family and Youth Ministries for the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau.

Bishop Liebrecht spoke on St. John Paul II’s letter to women, Mulieris Dignitatem – The Dignity and Vocation of Women , a fitting topic for Mother’s Day weekend. The letter reminds us that “women have an intrinsic dignity and a specific mission to inject love into the world.” We need only look to our Blessed Mother, Mary, to see dignity in action.

The day was made even more special with lunch served by the Knights of Columbus (Council 7680). Following lunch, Lynn Melendez spoke on the topic, “I Am Not Equipped,” offering a unique reflection on Mark’s Gospel, Chapter 6, the Feeding of the 5,000.

As a special treat, Tony Melendez — singer, songwriter, inspirational speaker, and Lynn’s husband — joined us and shared his beautiful music. Reflecting on his many blessings, he encouraged us to consider how God is working in our daily lives and to recognize the many blessings He bestows upon us each day.

On April 19, 2026, Our Lady of Fatima CCW awarded two scholarships; one to Evan Krintz and one to Lual G. Lual. Both are active members of OLOF who are graduating this year from high school and are continuing their education. To apply, they had to have at least a 3.0 GPA and submit an essay about their faith, their personal involvement in OLOF, and why they are interested in this scholarship. OLOF CCW VP, Valerie Doolittle awarded the scholarships.

On April 13, 2026, Our Lady of Fatima CCW held a General Meeting, featuring Joan Speck with the OLOF Quilters and Crafters Group, as their guest speaker. They meet twice monthly to make quilts, pocket quilts and shawls with lots of love and prayers for those in need. Each item is blessed and prayed over prior to giving it to the recipient. This is a free service they provide for our community.

The Pueblo District Council of Catholic Women hosted a lovely Faithful Friendship Tea on March 21 at 11:00 a.m., a special time set aside to gather in fellowship, faith, and gratitude for the meaningful friendships God places in our lives. The atmosphere was joyful and welcoming, with many women wearing beautiful hats and dresses, adding a charming touch to the tea party. Guests enjoyed an abundance of finger foods and delicious desserts, but most of all, they cherished the opportunity to spend time together, sharing laughter, stories, and faith. It was a truly uplifting occasion, enjoyed by all who attended.

On February 28th, the Pueblo Diocesan Council of Catholic Women hosted a beautiful and spiritually enriching Lenten Retreat at the Shrine of St. Thérèse. The day began with a warm and welcoming continental breakfast at 8:45 a.m., offering time for fellowship and connection among the approximately 65 women in attendance. Centered on the theme “In His Steps—Lent is not just about giving something up, but about giving of ourselves to God,” the retreat invited participants into deeper reflection and renewal. Guest speaker Deacon Ed Riccillo delivered an inspiring message, encouraging all to walk more closely with Christ through prayer, sacrifice, and acts of love. The retreat flowed gracefully from reflection to shared prayer and concluded with a delightful lunch, leaving all who attended feeling nourished both spiritually and physically. It was truly enjoyed by all.

St. Ignatius of Antioch partners and volunteers joined Room in the Inn to feed both the body and soul, offering a place where the unhoused men can be served and waited upon, receive hospitality and experience community. We were more than honored to serve the general and residential populations of 240 men with a homemade “Meat Loaf Luncheon meal” that included corn, cream potatoes with gravy, green beans, sweet roll, fresh squeeze lemonade and our famous banana pudding.

The St. Michael’s Council of Catholic Women (CCW) opened their arms and time to feed the Grand Prairie Homeless on February 21, 2026, as part of our outreach program. We prepared 100 hot meals, meatballs and pasta, and over 200 sandwiches including their snacks, and water bottles for their weekend meals. To identify the sandwiches from the hot meals, we provided a special plastic bag with scriptures which the homeless appreciated very much that lifted their spirit. We appreciated the help from our husbands and families as we worked together for this special outreach and care to our community. We were blessed to serve others. Hebrews 13:16 “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”

Our Lady of Fatima CCW provided a Lenten meal to its parishioners after the Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 20, 2026, which consisted of homemade soups, breads and salads. This year all free will offerings, from the Lenten meals at OLOF were sent to the Catholic Extension Society, which supports poor and remote Catholic Communities.

The North Platte Deanery of the Grand Island CCW met at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Saturday, March 7. The attendees enjoyed a presentation by Deanery President Cindy Dunbar entitled, “Mary’s Garden and Praying with Poetry.” DCCW President Sandy Eggert and Omaha Province Director Patricia Ferguson presented “Building a Spiritual Garden.” Attendees placed flowers in a vase according to past and present roles at all levels of council. Both programs served as a prelude to the 2026 annual Spring Assembly, “Spring Spiritual Gala” at Holy Spirit Catholic Church April 20.

The Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women of OKC held a retreat and service project event on March 14th, “Working in the Vineyard of the Lord.” The day started with breakfast and a spiritual reflection titled “Communion With The Saints” and given by Fr. Carson Krittenbrink. Other speakers spoke about different ways to be leaders in women’s ministries in the church, like Well Read Mom Book Club, Catholic Daughters, Women’s Bible Studies, and American Heritage Girls. Around $2000 worth of donated non-perishable food and hygiene items was collected to make over 150 Walk in Bags for Catholic Charities to give to those facing hardship.

Members from the Milwaukee Archdiocesan CCW honored several mothers of clergy members from the Milwaukee Archdiocese at the 3rd annual Tea for Moms of Seminarians and Priests. A delicious lunch of homemade tea sandwiches and desserts were provided by members of the board. A mother of two priests shared her heartwarming experience of her sons from their youth and when they discerned their journey to the priesthood. Fr. Brad Krawczyk, our spiritual advisor who teaches at the seminary, assured the mothers of how much their sons love them and speak of them. Everyone looks forward to this event each year.

St. Boniface CCW (Springfield, GA) hosted a yard sale on February 6 and 7. This year’s sale was different since it was decided not to sell clothing or shoes. There were great deals on dining room sets, bedroom furniture, kitchenware, books, jewelry and purses. Proceeds from the sale will go toward future renovations needed to the church property. It was also a good opportunity to recruit new members to attend CCW meetings.

On Saturday, January 24, the Savannah Deanery CCW hosted a luncheon at the Cathedral of St. John in Savannah. Melissa Wacter, President of the Savannah Diocesan CCW, spoke about the meetings she has attended and the activities going on within the Savannah Diocese. The theme of the luncheon was to carry on the mission of the National Council of Catholic Women through Spirituality, Leadership and Service. Attendees were encouraged to bring a variety of socks which were contributed to the Cathedral King’s Men Divine Care Kit. Three of the members of the Cathedral King’s Men spoke about their newly formed organization and said that anyone interested could share information about the organization with their parish.

The Springfield Illinois DCCW held its 96th Annual Convention on October 1at at St. Paul’s in Highland. Guest speaker Claire Dwyer, author of This Present Paradise , deepened our interest and understanding of St Elizabeth of the Holy Trinity. Claire’s words brought St. Elizabeth to life. We also enjoyed the miraculous survival story of author Judith V Rooney. Bishop Paprocki celebrated Mass with 250 women in attendance and a collection was taken up for St Paul’s sister parish in Haiti. A buffet luncheon, silent auction, vendors, prayer tree, and pot of gold raffle were also included in the days activities.

Our Roses for Babies program is a special way St. Boniface supports expectant mothers and their families. Each family places their name on a red rose, which is moved monthly until the baby is born. After the birth, we deliver a meal and a handmade baby blanket to welcome the newest member of the family. Recently, parishioner Marisol and her family received a meal, a beautiful crocheted baby blanket made by one of our CCW members, and gifts for her children. Pictured with Marisol are her daughter Deymi, her son Sebastian, and her newborn baby, Manuel.

Our Lady of Fatima CCW collected a car load full of soap and shampoo after the Thanksgiving weekend masses. The collection is for Family Promise, whose mission is to help families experiencing homelessness achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response. The items were delivered on 12/10/25 and the CCW was told that Family Promise will not run out of soap or shampoo for a long time!

On December 1st, Our Lady of Fatima CCW held its Advent by Candlelight service. The evening began with 30 minutes of music (provided by the OLOF musicians), then had readings of the 4 Sunday Advent Gospels with reflections by Deacon Leon Dodd, and ended with Benediction. It was a lovely way to prepare for Advent. Attendees received a Padre Pio Novena booklet to help them prepare for Christmas.

The Greater Meriden Council of Catholic Women is busy again making Christmas bags for Catholic residents in nursing homes. Year after year, these bags have brought joy and happiness to many who often feel alone and sad at this time of year. Above a group of the Council is standing in front of a sampling of the bags ready for delivery!

The bags are filled with small items, such as soaps, socks, scarves, puzzle books, rosaries and small religious books. Last year they provided over 400 bags to multiple nursing homes. This is a labor of love as they fill not only the Christmas bags but also the hearts of those who will not feel so alone during this beautiful season.

St. Mary CCW (Lowell, MI)

The St. Mary CCW in Lowell, Michigan celebrated America Needs Fatima on Saturday, October 11 by sponsoring a public rosary in the city’s park adjacent to a main thoroughfare. Fifty parishioners prayed the Rosary, Angelus, Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Divine Praises, and sang Ave Maria to Our Lady. Their pastor, Father Michael Goodwin (seen on the left), led the group in the Prayer of Total Consecration by Saint Maximilian Kolbe and the event ended with the solemn singing of O Sanctissima. The CCW provided lunch after this beautiful tribute to Our Blessed Mother.

The Greater Meriden Council of Catholic Women recently celebrated their 85th Creche Dedication on November 30th in Meriden CT. This was a very special dedication because not only was it the 85th, but this year featured a brand new and beautiful nativity set. The old, worn figures were removed to be refurbished and the manger was thoroughly cleaned and new straw was placed inside. Even the Angel on the outside got a new coat of paint. This new Creche is a labor of love and we were proud and happy to present it to the citizens of Meriden.

Our Lady of Fatima CCW in Alcoa, TN hosted the Smoky Mt. Deanery Council of Catholic Women’s Fall General Meeting. We began the day with praying the rosary, a meeting, luncheon then ending with guest speaker Mother Gabrielle Marie Breaux of the Benedictine Daughters of Divine Will. She shared with us how they got started and how to live in the Divine Will. It was a beautiful day of fellowship and sharing our faith.

On 10/13/25, OLOF CCW held its General Meeting with Deb Maupin from OLOF Respect Life Ministry, as their speaker. One of the topics she mentioned, was the billboard they promote sponsors to fund annually, as seen in the photo. This billboard is posted during the month of May on Highway 129 in Alcoa, TN. Additionally, she recruited some CCW volunteers to pray the Rosary outside of Planned Parenthood weekly with The Respect Life Ministry.

Winona/Rochester DCCW (Mapleton, MN)

The Winona-Rochester Diocesan Council of Catholic Women held their convention “This Is My Body-Believe in the Eucharist” at St. Adrian in Adrian, MN on Saturday, October 12. The day included mission collections for Rochester Medical Missions and Cross Catholic Box of Joy, and Keynote speakers such as Melissa Neumann, who spoke on “Healing Hidden Wounds” and Dawn Ritter, FNP, who spoke on “Hold Your Feminine Genius.” A $2,000 scholarship was presented to 3rd-year seminarian Stephen Ferrazzano, a convert to Catholicism. We planted a “Mary Garden”, shopped with Catholic vendors, had purse and cupcake drawings, celebrated Mass, installed Vice President Joanie Betsinger and renewed or made wonderful friendships. We were blessed!

On September 27, 2025, OLOF CCW held a rummage sale to raise money to award 2 scholarships to 2026 graduating high school seniors of OLOF, who are continuing their education at a college or university. We were blessed with great weather, considering that rain was in the forecast all week.

The Greater Meriden Council of Catholic Women (GMCCW) recently sponsored a table at the St. Carlo Acutis and Parish Life Day at Holy Angels Church of Our Lady Queen of Angels Parish in Meriden, CT. The event included an exhibition of St. Carlo’s life, Eucharistic miracles and adoration, relics of our saints, talks with ministries and organizations from the parish (like GMCCW) and even a kids corner with rosaries and crayons. Lincoln DCCW (Juniata, NE)

The Lincoln Diocesan Council of Catholic Women held their 2025 Fall meeting at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Roseland, Nebraska, hosted by the parish CCW and Pastor Fr. Brian Werth. Thirty-five diocesan women, the Province of Omaha Director and the LDCCW Spiritual Advisors attended. Fr. Jay Buhman spoke about the ‘Masses and Tears’ apostolate, praying for family members no longer practicing their Catholic faith.

Diocesan Women Cultivate Space for Prayer at Marywood Retreat & Conference Center Events.
What’s one prayer or intention you would bring to Our Lady in this sacred space? Join us in lifting hearts to Mary.
According to DCCW President Pattie Halle, the group has installed a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, added solar lighting, and begun planning the landscaping that will surround the sacred space. Once complete, the garden will serve as a serene haven for the retired priests living at Casa San Pedro residence, retreatants, visitors and all who seek a quiet moment with Our Lady in prayer.
“We hope the garden will be a place where hearts are lifted and spirits are renewed through Mary’s gentle presence,” Halle said.
The Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (DCCW) is sowing seeds of faith and beauty at Marywood Retreat & Conference Center with the creation of a Marian prayer garden. The project, inspired by a desire to provide a peaceful space for reflection and devotion, is already taking shape.

In January 2025, Our Lady of Fatima Council of Catholic Women promoted an additional day of Eucharistic Adoration in their chapel on campus. CCW members volunteered to sign up and commit to a one hour time period on a Tuesday following the noon mass until 6pm. Since this was opened to the community, it has grown to several people spending time with Jesus. Thanks to Vicki Johnson, who orchestrated, promoted and implemented this much needed time with our Lord!

The Greater Meriden Council of Catholic Women recently held their end of the year Potluck Dinner at the Rosary Hall of St Joseph Church, Our Lady Queen of Angels Parish in Meriden, CT. We announced our officers for the coming year and then enjoyed a presentation by Maribeth Stewart Bogoslawski, who is an NGO Representative to the United Nations, and on the Board of WUCWO (World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations.) Maribeth told us of her many visits with Pope Francis and also her recent visit with Pope Leo. She makes frequent trips to Rome and we were all in awe as she spoke.

On May 2, 2025, seven young women from the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis were awarded the Golden Rose Award at our 92 ^nd Convention. We had a total of 22 nominations(gems) that were sent in to us which were all worthy of their leadership, spirituality, and service to their parish and the archdiocese.

A golden rosary and plaque were given to them. The winners are pictured with Archbishop Bernard Hebda.

On June 8, Pentecost Sunday, The Council of Catholic Women of Our Lady of Fatima, Alcoa, TN installed its officers for the 2025-2026 term. It was a beautiful ceremony conducted by Fr. Pete Iorio, our Spiritual Advisor and Cheryl Land, a two-term Past President . Each officer received a saint’s name and a Lady of Good Council candle tied with a colored ribbon, represented with their officer’s title.

Please pray for them as they lead the women of OLOF in spirituality, leadership and service.

St. Mary’s Visitation Christian Women, an affiliate of the Milwaukee ACCW, held their annual Salad Supper on April 9. There were over 100 salads offered. Guest speaker, Talia Westerby, delivered a message titled “We Are A Village.” Through opening scripture, hearing personal testimony, and giving time of reflection and discussion, we explore how Jesus calls us to grow as a community and truly live as a village. $1,000 in donations were collected for the Vocation Purse Club.

The Detroit Province CCW sponsored a statewide, triennial convention, “ Rejoicing in Glorious Hope”, Friday, April 25, and Saturday, April 26, at the Sheraton Airport Hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Women from the Grand Rapids DCCW, plus diocesan groups from around the state were invited. Speakers included: Barbara Heil (missionary, teacher, & evangelist), Sean Breedon (Ave Maria Radio), and Christy Buck (mental health expert). Special guest, Bishop Walkowiak, celebrated Mass at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Grand Rapids.

Milwaukee Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women held their annual Tea for Moms of Seminarians and Priests. Lydia LoCoco the mother of a priest spoke to the moms about her experience with her son who is a priest and her daughter who is taking her final vows soon.

Our spiritual advisor, Fr. Brad Krawczyk, who also teaches at the seminary, shared how their sons speak so highly of their moms.

The clinic offers support for unplanned pregnancy (ultrasounds), classes in parenting for parents/families and a Boutique with items to help them. It was very successful! St. Mary Immaculate CCW’s April Meeting activity was “CREATIVITY GALORE!” A Craft and Hobby Exhibit by our talented women. We had women that knitted or crocheted blankets. Some ladies displayed their quilted blankets. We had Diamond Dot pictures, tapestry, art, and handmade cards. One of the ladies is a reader and created a unique way of displaying books she read. Our beekeeping member brought in a picture of her prepared to work with her bees which was included in a nice display. This activity brought a lot of discussion and a new vision of the talent that is in our group!

Stark Deanery Council of Catholic Women hosted our Inaugural Seminarians’ Mothers Tea on April 12, 2025, in the Gathering Room at Christ the Servant Parish, in Canton, Ohio. We enjoyed beautiful weather as our four mothers and two grandmothers shared stories of faith, family, and love. Father Tom Cebula, the Stark Deanery Spiritual Advisor, celebrated Mass, and wonderful music was provided by P.J. Chavez.

Along with other stories and antidotes on the day, one of the mothers who once had children in P.J.’s choir, reminded him that he influences people as he lives his life of faith. One of those students is now a Temporary Deacon, soon to profess vows. Pictured here are Father Tom Cebula, Mother Seagraves, Mother Bodenschatz, Mother Huzyak, Mrs. Lorenz, Mrs. Malich, Ms. Bell.

Every Wednesday during Lent, at noon, in St. Faustina’s St. Stanislaus Chapel in Meriden CT, the Stations of the Cross were sponsored by the Greater Meriden Council of Catholic Women. We began on March 12, and concluded April 16th. We had parishioners from all 3 Meriden parishes, with many hoping we could do this again next year.

Many thanks to the members of GMCCW who made this possible and to Fr Ziemnicki for the use of the chapel.

Also, thanks to the office staff in the 3 parishes for putting notices in the bulletins so that everyone had an opportunity to see it.

The Savannah Deanery CCW spring luncheon was held on Saturday, March 15, at the Effingham College & Career Academy located approximately 30 miles north of Savannah. The 2025-2026 Savannah Deanery CCW Officer Installation was held at this event. Denise Burdick from St. Boniface Catholic Church spoke about the church’s community outreach program and Melissa Smith spoke about the Pregnancy Care Center in Rincon.

Lynda Rozell (author, poet and former attorney ) spoke about her spiritual journey as a full time camper. She is the author of “Journeys with a Tin Can Pilgrim” and In “Plain Sight Hidden” – a collection of poems. The spirit of joy and peace in Lynda’s poems may inspire readers to find the same in their own lives. Attached is a picture of Lynda speaking about her spiritual journey.

Several times a year, the Women’s Guild of Saint Paul the Apostle joyfully prepares and serves homemade meals and desserts to about 90 students at the University Catholic Center at UT Dallas after their Sunday afternoon Mass. UCC, a Diocese of Dallas program, is the spiritual hub for Catholic students, faculty, staff, and families. UCC provides liturgies, confession, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and fellowship through Newman Catholic Ministry and FOCUS.

Embracing the Call to Holiness retreat was held March 8, at St. James the Greater Parish in Eau Claire, WI. Many women from the diocese were present. NCCW president, Beth Mahoney, emceed our day. The main speaker was Marge Steinhage Fenelon; our final speaker was Christine Warloski, her conversation related to Everyday Women Disciples. It was a joy to spend the day with other women who share the love of God.

This event is made possible through donations from the LDCCW, local PCCWs and businesses. After paying expenses half of the monies are given to parish youth programs through grants.

Cumberland Mountain Deanery (Knoxville, TN)

All Catholic women living in the Cumberland Mountain Deanery, Diocese of Knoxville, TN were invited to an afternoon of Faith and Fun with Friends on January 26, 2025. .

The goal of Faith and Fun with Friends was to reach out to ALL Catholic women in the Deanery who have fallen away from the church, do not attend Mass, or are just not involved, whatever their reasons. Our focus was on creating an inclusive, welcoming, and supportive community for women: a safe space where women from diverse backgrounds came together to share their faith and meet new friends. Approximately 100 women enjoyed a prayer service, an inspiring talk on “A Sisterhood of Saints,” door prizes, refreshments including a hot chocolate bar, and the San Miguel Dancers with fun sprinkled throughout. This event was sponsored in cooperation with the Father Joe Brando Committee.

Grand Rapids DCCW (Grand Rapids, MI)

The Grand Rapids DCCW held its inaugural Golden Rose Award ceremony on Sunday, February 16th. We were hoping for 8 applicants but we actually received 16! We were very delighted that 12 young ladies were able to attend the event. With a monetary donation from a local foundation, we were able to give the girls each a $125 voucher to use to attend our 2025 Province Convention, which will take place in Grand Rapids this April: REJOICING IN GLORIOUS HOPE. Participants also received a Golden Rose, Our Lady of Good Counsel Pin, a certificate, and a check for $100 from their home parish.

We were thrilled with event and are hoping much fruit will come of it.

Every February, the Women’s Guild of Saint Paul the Apostle hosts a fundraiser for the White Rose Women’s Center, featuring a silent auction and a baby supply drive. This year we raised $1,125 and filled an SUV with essential baby items. The Center’s Director shared updates and moving testimonials that brought many to tears. Based in Dallas, White Rose supports women facing unplanned pregnancies offering them resources and guidance, and empowering them to choose life for their babies.

This outreach has been an ongoing program for the past 10 years. One family contributed over 300 Valentines. On February 16, Our Lady of Fatima’s Council of Catholic Women in Alcoa, TN recognized two ladies with a Golden Rose Award. Each exemplified the tenets of CCW with spirituality, leadership and service in their parish, diocese and community. The Chicago Archdiocese Council of Catholic Women, Vicariate I, celebrated its 10th Anniversary of the Golden Rose Awards on February 1, 2025. Interim Vicar Jeremiah Boland congratulated the girls who represented 25 parishes and 3 high schools (St. Viator, Carmel, and Woodlands Academy), with a certificate, silk rose and a blessed rosary bracelet. Cadets from District #214 Wheeling High School ROTC program escorted the girls to receive their certificate.

Vicariate I appreciates the parishes’ recognition of the Golden Rose concept encouraging the girls faith in action with service to their parish.

A contingent of members from the Greater Meriden Council of Catholic Women recently attended a presentation of the Patriotic Rosary by the Knights of Columbus, Council #5 at Our Lady Queen of Angels Parish, Holy Angels Campus. The rosary was recited for Consecration of our Nation, for the Presidency of the United States of America, for the Supreme Court of the U.S.A, for each State, for the Govenors, and for all the Counties and Municipal Offices of the U.S.A. Patriotic music was interspersed with the readings and made a truly moving experience.

Past NCCW President Jean Kelly (L) and MACCW President Diane Oakland (R) were honored to attend the Vigil on the Eve of the installation and the Installation of their new Archbishop, The Most Reverend Jeffrey Scott Grob. The installation was held on January 14, 2025.

On January 13, 2025, The Council of Catholic Women of Our Lady of Fatima in Alcoa, TN held their General Meeting. In recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, their guest speaker was Hayley Griffith from CCAHT, Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking in East TN. Her presentaion educated us on what is human trafficking and who are the typical victims. Attending CCW members brought food items for Hayley to take to CCAHT’s Transitional Housing for trafficked victims.

The Milwaukee Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (MACCW) sponsored an information and recruiting booth on November 16, at the 16th Annual Women of Christ Conference. More than 1,900 women from the Milwaukee area attended the event, gathering for a day of prayer, speakers, and spiritual growth opportunities. The conference culminated with a Liturgy celebrated by Archbishop Jerome Listecki. Collectively they have been active with CCW for a total of 127 years having all served in their local parishes as well as at the Deanery, Diocesan and the Province level. Evelyn’s leadership with the Council of Catholic Women is what brought them together and they are still active in Council today. At the December meeting of the Sacred Heart Council of Catholic Women, President Kris Brandner decided to change things up a bit. Ladies from the 4-Parish Community were invited for a lasagna potluck before the meeting. For a touch of some holiday fun after the business meeting, Amber Epperly, baker extraordinaire, provided an instructional program on cookie decorating. Each person received a box of 5 cut-out sugar cookies and 4 tubes of frosting. Amber’s decorating instructions and techniques produced some beautiful and tasty results!

GREEN BAY DIOCESAN COUNCIL CELBRATES 100 ^TH ANNIVERSARY

November 17 ^th , 2024, marked the 100 ^th Anniversary of the formation of the Green Bay Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. The Most Rev. Bishop Ricken celebrated Mass at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, the same cathedral where 228 delegates assembled for Mass and an organizational meeting, Nov. 17, 1924! Bishop Ricken provided highlights of the GBDCCW’s accomplishments over the past 100 years. Also included for the first time was the Golden Rose Program honoring 5 young ladies for their exemplary leadership to their church and community.

Our Lady of Fatima CCW in Alcoa, TN held a diapers and wipes drive over the course of two weekends to help support their local Pregnancy Resource center. On December 10, a “Baby Shower for Mary” luncheon was held at The Olive Garden and the diapers and wipes were then delivered by CCW members to the Center.

St. Edward CCW of Minneota, MN recently shared a Sunday afternoon with the residents of our local assisted living and the apartments at the same location. We began by decorating their rooms for Christmas if they were interested. We provided the decorations with donations from our parishioners. We followed decorating with homemade cookies and coffee. To end our afternoon we played BINGO with the residents complete with prizes. The smiles of both the residents served and those who did the serving certainly proved that this was a wonderful afternoon for all involved and helped everyone enjoy some Christmas spirit!

The evening began with 30 minutes of meditative music by OLOF’s musicians, the four Sunday Gospels of Advent read by CCW’s members, reflection by Rev. Pete Iorio, assisted by OLOF CCW’s candidate for the Golden Rose Award and ending with the Benediction. It was a beautiful evening to unite all parishioners together to prepare for Advent.

Peggy has worked with Pro Life Wisconsin for over 30 years, serving in a variety of capacities, from sidewalk counselor to Director of the organization. On October 14, 2024, the Nurse Manager, Sarah Grimes, from the St. Mary’s Legacy Clinic was the guest speaker at Our Lady of Fatima’s General Meeting in Alcoa, TN. The Clinic gives medical assistance to those who have no insurance. One of their recent trips consisted of giving aid to the victims from hurricane Helene in East TN. Since October was Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, Sarah also shared some of the types of situations they encounter with domestic abuse.

Box of Joy, sponsored by Cross Catholic Outreach, are Christmas gifts sent to children in developing countries like Haiti, Malawi and the Dominican Republic. The boxes are filled with toys, clothing, school supplies, a rosary and The Story of Jesus. These gifts represent Christ’s love and compassion to a child who may have never before received a Christmas gift.

Members of the Florida Council of Catholic Women can be found all around the State of Florida, making a tremendous impact through faithful service in their parishes and communities. Catholic Days at the Capitol has benefited from the attendance of FCCW members for many years. “One would be hard-pressed to name a better partner group to the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops when it comes to lobbying the Florida legislature in person and electronically, and spreading awareness of the key public policy concerns of the day – on legislation, proposed constitutional amendments, and building up members of the Church as faithful citizens,” noted FCCB executive director, Michael Sheedy.

In appreciation for this ongoing support, the bishops were pleased to present the Thomas A. Horkan Jr., Distinguished Catholic Leader Award to the Florida Council of Catholic Women. Brenda Dolan, FCCW president/province director, accepted the award on behalf of the Council members.

St. Andrews parish hosted the AACCW annual convention. Located on the Chattahoochee River in Roswell Georgia, the beautiful grounds provided both beauty and spirituality. The AACCW officers provided an agenda packed with meetings, workshops, and excellent guest speakers. And of course, lots of food, fellowship and fun. Sunday’s Mass was celebrated by the Archbishop of Atlanta. The theme this year was Loving in the Goodness of God. Under the AACCW leadership of President Pamela Tennell and President Elect Louise Coniglio, as well as St. Andrew’s leadership of Tammy Thomas and Wanda Newell, the convention reflected the theme all weekend.

We were blessed with beautiful weather and a great turn out. Volunteers pulled up in a parking space and sold right from their vehicles.

A contingent of The Greater Meriden Council of Catholic Women attended the Norwich Diocesan Council of Catholic Women Presentation “ A Day of Reflection” on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church in Groton, CT.

Susan Conroy (center) was the speaker. Susan made her first trip to Calcutta to work with Mother Teresa in 1986. In the late 90’s, Mother Teresa gave Susan permission to write a book about her experiences. “ Mother Teresa’s Lessons of Love and Secrets of Sanctity followed by Praying in the Presence of Our Lord with Mother Teresa.”

On August 4, 2024, The Council of Catholic Women of Our Lady of Fatima in Alcoa, TN, awarded two $500 scholarships at the graduation mass for 2024 high school seniors.

Candidates had to write an essay, have a 3.0+ GPA , have plans to continue their education at a college or university, and be active members of Our Lady of Fatima parish. Selected applicants were chosen by the CCW officers.

The St. Mary’s Council of Catholic Women in Lowell MI teamed
up in their church kitchen to make 50 two-person freezer meals for the
church staff to hand out to those in immediate need. A mother of young children secured the recipes, ingredients, volunteers and donations. The Youth Group helped with
cleanup and dishes. Not only did the CCW members experience working
together on this project but while the food was in the oven they were
able to chat and get to know each other better. This
successful project will be repeated in the fall.

We have a new bishop! After waiting for over a year, the Diocese of Knoxville, TN ordained its 4th bishop, Mark Beckman on July 26, 2024. While several CCW members attended his ordination, those who couldn’t be there, attended a watch party held in our social hall.

In addition, Our Lady of Fatima hosted a bilingual deanery Mass with Bishop Beckman on July 31, 2024 with a Meet and Greet reception afterwards. Several CCW members of the Smoky Mountain Deanery attended, participated musically, baked for the reception, and helped with serving.

Here in the Knoxville Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (KDCCW), in combination with our KDCCW Service Commission, we chose a service project for the year that we have been promoting since December 2023. It’s a combined project that both Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) have done for a number of years. They are the Madonna Plan and Water for Life. The Madonna Plan focuses on maternal health through vaccinations for infants and children as well as breastfeeding support and education. Water for Life focuses on building sustainable wells in areas that need clean and dependable water sources. Each parish, deanery, as well as individuals have donated monetarily to the project. Some of the parishes used funds from Fish Fry’s or International Dinners to donate those funds to our Service Project. We thank all for them for their service to God and others. We are proud to announce that we raised $6,250 for our 2024 Service Project! We split this service project between Water for Life and The Madonna Plan and left it up to the donor how they wanted that donation to be applied. Of the total, $3,662.50 will be sent to Water for Life and the remaining $2,587.50 will be given to The Madonna Plan.

Sowing Abundant Seeds: SDCCW 74 ^th Annual Convention.

It was a convention filled with spirituality, celebration and fun. Recognized and honored were seven Golden Rose nominees, five Pax Christi Deanery Finalists and nominees, and two Mary Jane Morancyk Hennessy Scholarship recipients. And of course, the best part of any gathering is getting together with one’s Council Sisters and renewing previous friendships.

At its monthly luncheon meeting on May 11, 2024 the Catholic Woman’s Club of Racine, Wisconsin, honored three priests observing milestone anniversaries of their ordination. All three priests have served, or presently serve, as spiritual director for the organization.

Fr. Richard Molter (center) began his priestly ministry at St. Edward Parish in Racine from 1964-1970. He returned as pastor of St. Edward in 1993 and retired from St. Edward Parish in 2006. Fr. Molter celebrated the 60th anniversary of his ordination with a Mass and luncheon at St. Edward on Sunday, June 2. Fr. Terry Huebner (right) who retired in 2017 as pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Parish, observed the 50th anniversary of his ordination with a Mass and luncheon at St. Sebastian Parish on May 26. (In an interesting footnote, Fr. Huebner was an altar boy at Fr. Molter’s Mass of Thanksgiving / First Mass at the former St. Leo Parish in Milwaukee.) Fr. Allen Bratkowski (left) is marking the 35th anniversary of his ordination. Fr. Allen retired as pastor of St. Edward and St. Richard parishes in 2019.

Thirty-four first time attendees joined us to hear our dynamic speakers.

Angelina Amerigo, Miss Minnesota 2023, a young Catholic Woman whose initiative is ‘One bottle, One straw, One bag at a time.’

Jessica Bartholomew, director and founder of A.C.T. United – Anti child trafficking spoke to us on the plight of young people lured into trafficking.

The children of the parish participate in the custom of the Holy Family and the Saints searching for food and shelter. Fr Dennis Kress blesses the donations. All donations are given to Crazy Quilt Food Pantry, an outreach program of East Tennessee Catholic Charities.

The Joliet Diocesan Council of Catholic Women held their annual Woman of the Year Mass on Saturday, April 20 ^th . The Mass was celebrated by the Most Rev. Ronald Hicks, Bishop of the Diocese of Joliet. Forty-five women from diocesan parishes were honored at the Mass with the theme Full of Grace. These women have answered the call by saying Y es , as our Mother Mary did. They are living out the mission of the Council of Catholic Women in their works to serve others in the name of our Lord. The Savannah Diocesan CCW recently held its 85th convention in Warner Robins, GA. The theme of the convention was “We Belong To Each Other”. Fr. Steven Pavignano (a Franciscan friar and Spiritual Advisor of the Macon CCW Deanery) and Frank Mulcahy, Executive Director of the Georgia Catholic Conference, were two of the featured speakers. Other speakers included Tiffany Johnson, Director of a residential re-entry center run by Dismas Charities, Inc. and Fr. Brian O’Shaughnessy , Vocations Promoter for the Columbus Deanery. Marlene Watkins, author of Everyday Miracles of Lourdes, also spoke about her journeys to Lourdes. Bishop Stephen Parkes officiated at the Saturday evening Mass along with the SDCCW Spiritual Advisor Fr. David Koetter and other local clergy.

Madison DCCW (Waunakee, WI)

The Madison Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and their parishes participated in the 2023 Box of Joy Project through Cross Catholic Outreach. The main drop off point was at St. Martin of Tours Parish in Martinsville in the former Catholic school building where 681 boxes were packed on November 11 and 12. Our northern diocesan parishes collected 327 boxes and took them to an Oshkosh drop off site for a combined diocesan collection of 1,008 compared to 763 boxes in 2022.

A long-time member of the Greater Meriden Council of Catholic Women, Nancy Ball is pictured with our Spiritual Advisor, Fr. Dominic Anaeto at the dedication of the Divine Mercy Media Center at St. Joseph campus of Our Lady Queen of Angels parish. The library was a dream of Nancy and her late husband, John, who donated their many religious books, CDs and DVDs to the Parish for others to enjoy. It is their hope that the Media Center will grow and continue to provide comfort and repose for reading and quiet meditation and prayer.

Two books authored by Father Dominic were presented as the newest books to be added to the library.

St. John the Baptist CCW (Winfield, IL)

St. John’s CCW took up a collection in January 2024 for the residents of the local nursing home. At the February meeting CCW members assembled the gallon zip-lock bags filled with toiletries, writing materials, greeting cards, crayons, Slipper socks, tissue packs and candy. The bags were given to the 130 residents at their Valentine Party. St. John’s began this project in 2021 and with the generosity of our members and parishioners, the residents have benefitted.

The Rosary with Adoration was prayed at St. John the Baptist parish on January 27, 2024. Following our time in the chapel, donuts and coffee were enjoyed and attendees visited with our pastor, Rev. Christopher Lankford, KHS. Fr. Chris offered this idea and we appreciated praying and reflecting together as well as visiting and sharing ideas. About 35 women and men prayed and socialized afterwards. We used the Pray the Rosary with NCCW as a guideline with the Joyful Mysteries – A New Beginning prayed at the beginning of each decade.

A former NCCW Province Director from Indianapolis, Ella Lenore (Sutherlin) Wagner, 90, went home to be with the Lord, her loving husband Richard ‘Dick’ Wagner and her daughter Pamela Johnson on March 21, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. She was born August 26, 1933 in Greencastle, Indiana to Minerva ‘Mae’ and Oral ‘Minner’ Sutherlin.

She attended the St. Vincent School of Nursing and upon her graduation in 1954, became a leader in the nursing community for 50 years. Ella met the love of her life, Dick, on a blind date and celebrated 63 years of marriage. She was a loving and involved wife and mother always willing to lend a helping hand.

Her love for involvement inspired her to become a leader within the Indiana Continuity of Care Association, the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Indianapolis, Clowes Hall Women’s Committee, Indianapolis Council of Catholic Women and St. Pius X Catholic Church (A member since 1966) and countless more.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Little Sisters of the Poor .

She leaves behind her children Susan Sapp, Andrew Wagner (Judy), Janet Eisenhut (Bob), Matthew Wagner (Tonya), eleven grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

She will be laid to rest at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery.

On Saturday, March 9, the Savannah Deanery CCW enjoyed lunch hosted by St. Frances Cabrini CCW. The program was presented by LaToya Scott from Tharros Place located in Pooler, GA. Its mission is to cultivate a culture of courage for adolescent survivors of human trafficking through compassionate and safe residential care, empowered and respected staff, and collaborative community outreach. Ms. Scott said their goal is to house 12 young women who have been abused. In addition to learning about Tharros Place, attendees also learned about a program entitled “Walking Through Grief” which is being sponsored by St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Wilmington Island – located east of Savannah.

In January, Jane Bernhardt celebrated her 100th birthday. In addition to being an active member of her parish CCW at St. Charles Borromeo in Cassville, Wisconsin, she has served as a past Grant Vicariate CCW President from 1972-1974 and a past Madison Diocesan CCW President from 1991-1992. She attended the Grant Vicariate meeting in May of 2022 and, at 98, was the oldest member in attendance. Jane spends a lot of time with family and friends and is not able to attend all of our meetings, but studies all of our reports at each meeting she attends.

Holy Spirit Council of Catholic Women in Macon, GA contributed $500 to the Sisters of Mercy Memorial Marker Restoration Project. The Sisters of Mercy started the first school in Bibb County, Georgia. They also started Mount de Sales Academy that currently serves students grades 6 to 12. 58 Sisters of Mercy are buried in Riverside Cemetery. The money that the CCW donated was used by Jackson Springs Garden Club and 10th grade students from Mount de Sales to clean the markers and place a cement rose on each stone.

Members of the local CCW hosted our first “Advent by Candlelight” on the evening of Saturday, December 9th, 2023 in order to prepare our hearts and minds for the Feast of the Incarnation, as well as for Christ’s Second Coming. CCW hostesses designed beautifully set tables and luscious desserts to create an elegant atmosphere for our faith filled guests to enjoy. This meaningful gathering included time for learning, reflection, sharing and singing with a focus on Four Holy Habits – frequent confession, reclaiming Sundays, regular mortification, and daily prayer.

St. Joseph’s CCW in Grand Rapids, Minnesota led their parish collection of items for the Second Harvest Food Bank. Parishioners were asked to bring one specific item each Sunday during Advent. Requested items included cereal, PB&J, canned meat, and personal care/paper products. The parishioners responded generously, and over the 4 weeks of Advent, CCW donated more than 500 items to the Food Bank. Buying one box of cereal, one jar of jelly, bottle of shampoo, or a can of tuna was easy and doable for everyone. It started a wave of charity and the giving spirit. God bless everyone who participated.

The St. Mary Magdalen Council of Catholic Women hosted their Annual Communion Mass and Breakfast on September 17, 2023. They had more than 100 ladies attend and their own Knights of Columbus prepare and serve breakfast.

At the breakfast, they hosted a shower for Life Choices Medical Clinic to benefit the mothers who choose to keep their babies instead of having an abortion. Some diocesan representatives spoke about the ministry of the Culture of Life Office and some representatives from Life Choices Medical Clinic spoke about the life-saving ministry of the clinic.

This annual event serves as their membership drive to gain new members to the Council of Catholic Women.

Parishioners generously donated a truck full of diapers and wipes for the local Pregnancy Resource Center. A luncheon was held after attending mass for Our Lady of Guadelupe.

Cathedral of St. John the Baptist CCW (Savannah, GA)

The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist CCW hosted an all day retreat on Saturday, August 19 in the Basilica’s Regina Coeli Hall. The retreat was called “Filling Your Life with God’s Love”. The retreat’s director was Carl McColman – a contemplative writer, retreat director and spiritual director. Mr. McColman shared the many ways to pray and reflect on the many blessings in our life. Women from all over Georgia attended the retreat which was advertised in local church bulletins. It was a sold out event which proves that everyone who was able to attend wanted to fill their life with God’s love. It was very well organized with prayer time, table discussions and delicious refreshments.

The pregnancy centers of our deanery were the recipients for this year’s service project. The ladies from eleven counties and thirty-five parishes raised $2,100.00. We presented a ceremonial check to Sue Sharon of Choices on August 3, 2023, at St. Mary’s Church in Paris, IL. We divided this sum of money to Choices, Family Life Center in Effingham, IL and LightHouse in Vandalia, IL. Each facility received a check for $700.00. We concluded our meeting with our famous “White Elephant” auction which raised $1,445.00 for the Seminary Fund.

A Mass honoring the recipients of the Bishop Blanchette Scholarship and the Father John M. Sebhar Servant Leadership Award was geld June 1st at the Blanchette Catholic Center in Crest Hill, IL. Mass was celebrated by the Most Rev. Ronald Hicks, Rev. James Antiporek, Rev John M Sebhar, and Rev John Peeters. The BBSF was established by the Joliet Diocesan Council of Catholic Women in 1982 in honor of Bishop Romeo Blanchette. The Father John M Sebhar Servant Leadership Award was established in 2016 by the JDCCW as a tribute of gratitude to Fr Sebhar.

St. Mary’s Visitation Parish in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee held their annual Salad Supper. Paper purse bags on the tables netted $725 in donations for the NCCW Purse Club. 146 women ages 20 – 95 attended and there were over 100 salads to choose from! The ladies of St. Charles Borromeo went above and beyond this Memorial Day for the veterans in their community. A remembrance book was signed, stars signed, and a white tree with lights honored the Veterans who had died through crosses and the Veterans who were not able to be there in person were included by stars signed by the Veterans at the event. A table setting was decorated with poppy petals for the Veterans, a symbol of remembrance and hope for the future.

In April the Council of Catholic Women of VA/TN based in Bristol, VA joined together for an Easter reflection, fellowship, and outreach.

Melanie Coddington, retired Richmond VA diocesan Regional Minister for Faith Formation gave a wonderful reflection on “Sharing our Bread”.

Members prepared a Seder Meal along with a booklet explaining the historical aspects of the Seder Meal. In addition, members had a cookbook exchange and donated cookbooks to the local library. In commitment to our monthly outreach, CCW gave a $250 donation to the St. Anne Parish Bereavement fund.

At the 84 ^th Savannah Diocesan Council of Catholic Women convention held in Savannah, GA from April 28-30, Rev. David A. Koetter, Diocesan Spiritual Advisor, was given the NCCW 100 Year History Book in appreciation of the more than 10 years he has served as Spiritual Advisor for SDCCW. Fr. Koetter is Pastor at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Savannah which was the host church for the convention. At the Saturday evening Mass, Bishop Stephen D. Parkes, Bishop of Savannah, acknowledged Fr. Koetter’s many years of service to CCW with the words “Blessed are you among women, Fr. Koetter”.

CCW of VA/TN draws membership from southwest VA and northeast TN and uses the facilities at St. Anne Church in Bristol, VA for our meetings.

We join together each month for spiritual reflection, fellowship, and outreach.

In March, the CCW members joined together for our Lenten reflection. Nineteen members met to pray the Stations of the Cross. As part of our commitment to outreach members donated cleaning supplies to Bristol Faith in Action, a local ministerial organization. This organization serves the community by providing help with utility bills, rent, and household commodities.

Mrs. Barbara Scott, a member of St. Boniface CCW in Springfield, GA, spoke about the history of Effingham County. Barbara is a direct descendant of settlers to the county and is also a member of the Effingham Historical Society. She wore a traditional German dirndl. Effingham County was developed in 1733 under the Treaty of Savannah and was originally established as St. Matthew Parish. One of the charities that St. Boniface CCW regularly contributes to is The Truetlen House – a non-profit home named after John Adam Truetlen (Georgia’s first Governor) that provides services for boys ages 10-21 in the Georgia Foster Care System.

Southwest Minnesota has a council of Catholic women (CCW) sponsored event that draws people from a three state area. Starting in 2015, the Tracy CCW began hosting a unique event that combines gardening and quilts. The event allows people to view beautiful gardens and quilts within a short driving distance from each other and end the afternoon with homemade pie from St. Mary’s. The pie project started 21 years ago and their pies are sold year-round. The event has been a huge success and the 2022 garden and quilt tour was even featured on an episode of Pioneer PBS’ “Prairie Yard and Garden”.

Guardian Angel Parish CCW of Oran, MO developed a monthly calendar to pray for our priests in the Diocese of Springfield – Cape Girardeau. The names of priests both living and deceased are listed on each day of the month. Printed prayers are provided as a guide to pray for the priests on the date that they are listed. Member Doris Eftink organized the program and provides a calendar for each month as it is prepared. We encourage each PCCW in our Diocese to share this prayer calendar with their PCCW members and other parishioners to show our love and appreciation for our priests!

St. Francis Xavier CCW’s December Service Project was to help the Skylark Crisis Pregnancy Center. We used money raised from the Fall Crafter’s Bazaar to purchase big ticket items; 3 car seats, 4 pack and plays, and one movable crib all brand new. The members were asked to bring smaller baby items to the meeting as if attending a baby shower. We filled a truck bed with baby supplies like onesies, diapers, wipes, towels, lotions, baby bottles, etc. Skylark is so thankful that our parish is helping to support their missions to help women, men, and children in our community.

St. Elizabeth Lodge is a program for single moms and their children who are experiencing a time of transition and need a soft place to fall. The St. Mary’s Council of Catholic Women, Johnson City, conducted through their annual baby bottle drive to collect donations through the Respect Life ministry to support the local pregnancy center. The SMCCW ladies along with their Spiritual Advisor, Father Dustin Collins, presented the charity with a check for $2,720.40 to assist with the Pregnancy Help Center’s mission. The Council of Catholic Women-Archdiocese of Washington hosted a 72-hour Rosary Prayer-a-thon from October 31-November 2 for peace in our communities. More than 140 people signed up to pray the Rosary and other prayers of peace and healing as horrible mass shootings and all violence in our communities tear at the heart of humanity. Participants united in prayer with Mary our Blessed Mother and all the angels and saints to help break the cycle of violence and bring peace to every heart and mind. The prayer-a-thon is one of many initiatives of CCW-ADW’s Peace Builders committee.

On September 28, 2022 the Springfield in Illinois Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (SDCCW) held their 93rd Annual Convention in Mattoon, Illinois. The Mattoon Deanery hosted 208 attendees from around the diocese in celebrating “Women of the Bible”, the theme of the convention. Part of the day’s activities included the 39 Silent Auction items donated by parishes from across the diocese, along with other raffle items. As of result of the Silent Auction proceeds and robust fund-raising efforts throughout the year from the five deaneries in the diocese, the SDCCW was able to present the Most Reverend Bishop Thomas John Paprocki a check for $6,000 for the diocese Seminary fund. Kudos to the women of the diocese!!

Mattoon Deanery Council of Catholic Women, Mattoon, IL

The MDCCW Mission Project was The St. Mary’s House in Mattoon, IL. This is a transitional place for women and children. The house will host three families at a time while they work on regaining their independence. We presented a ceremonial check to Father John Titus at our August 4, 2022 deanery meeting at St. Mary’s Annunciation in Shumway, IL. We raised $3,635.00 in four months to purchase the kitchen appliance package consisting of a refrigerator, stove and microwave! Our offertory at Holy Mass collected $526.00 for a grand total of $4,151.00. We concluded the meeting with a “White Elephant” auction which raised $1,257.00 for the Seminary Fund.

The province of Omaha celebrated their 50th anniversary July 18, 2022, in Grand Island, NE. Speaker Angela Copenhaver endeavored to move middle-minded pro-abortion individuals to the mindset of protecting ALL humans. Bishop Joseph Hanefeldt encouraged praising God for 50 years, looking for ways of renewal, going forward with hope as there is more to be done, and trusting the Lord’s providence.
Province Director Theresa Pavlik and past Province Directors Marylin Ericksen, Agnes Anderson, Deanna Reardon, Darleen Schulte, Jo Ann Messing and Susan Johnson shared stories about their two-years as PD. The day concluded on a sweet note—a 50th anniversary cake.

Stella Maris Catholic Parish in Door County, Wisconsin held a Women’s Tea to support Faith Formation Students’ trip to World Youth Day in Portugal. Twenty-five ladies attended to listen to Lynn Church of Tea Thyme speak on the many varieties and benefits of drinking tea. All had a good time and we plan to make this an annual event.

The Kolbe Center serves to both assist women in crisis with an unplanned pregnancy in adherence to Catholic teachings, as well as, provide education and expertise on Catholic Pro-Life Activities. Their services are based on Catholic teaching and belief in the sanctity of the human person and the dignity of human life.

At the Savannah Diocesan CCW Convention held in Brunswick, GA, Ms. Yoshi Jones (top left), Director of Operations at the House of Hope Refuge of Love, spoke about the young women who are referred by Department of Family and Children Services and Georgia Cares. The goal is to graduate the young women by age 18. They are taught time management and other skills to help the graduates avoid being homeless. The Detroit Province held their “Beacons of Light” Convention April 29 – 30, 2022 in Frankenmuth, MI. The Mass collection, well over $1000.00, will be given to Emmaus House, which supports homes for women coming from jail or rehab. We also held a drawing for two hand-blown, decorated eggs. These eggs were hand painted in the Ukraine. Thanks to the generosity of our attendees, $850.00 will go to Catholic Relief Services for the Ukrainian people.

An inspiring speaker and delicious salads were enjoyed by all. Paper purses were on each table for donations to the NCCW Purse Club. Over $1,000 in donations were sent to NCCW.

The New Britain Council of Catholic Women sponsored a tea to benefit the only deaf apostolate in our deanery. This tea was able to fund travel and educational expenses to further her skills in servicing the deaf parishioners. In a dual presentation, the New Britain Council of Catholic Women presented a check for $1,000 to Marissa Rivera (deaf apostolate for Divine Providence) in support of her continuing education as a deaf apostolate. The check was a direct result of a fundraising “TEA” sponsored by the NBCCW. In kind, Marissa presented Divine Providence a painting in thanks for their support.

On Friday, March 25, Our Lady of the Cove PCCW, Kimberling City, MO hosted Donna Cori who presented her Stations of the Cross with music she composed and also video. What a powerful walk to Calvary with Jesus Christ! Donna presented a Lenten Retreat for fifty-one PCCW ladies on Saturday. She sang the rosary, sang the Divine Mercy Chaplet and gave a wonderful talk on the Seven Sorrows of Mary! Her beautiful voice truly enhanced our Catholic Faith.

Our March meeting/retreat on “The Eucharist, Heaven and Earth United “was held at St. Philip Neri Church in Midwest City, OK. We presented awards to the winners of our Jr- High School Essay contest. Pictured (lt. to rt.) 3rd place, Jennifer Dugger; Kathy Shannon, Spirituality Chair; second place, Katherine Menz,; and Novalyn Greff, CRCCW President. Our first-place winner, Milly Greenhaw was unable to join us. Their essay question was on defending the belief that the Eucharist is the true body and blood of Christ. We also collected items for the DragonFly home, an organization working with victims of Human Trafficking.

WUCWO NORTH AMERICA REGION CONFERENCE 2021

The WUCWO North America Region Conference was held at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA on 24 August 2021, the day prior to the start of the NCCW Convention. The day started with a breakfast offered by the hotel, and then attendees gathered in the meeting room where the stage was graced with a large WUCWO NA Region Conference banner above the stage, another banner on the podium, the flag of Vatican City, and lovely red and white floral arrangements. Each attendee table had small Canadian and USA flags as a centerpiece. The day began with the WUCWO video prepared by the Vatican Dicastery for Communication and went on to an Opening Prayer followed by recognition of Joann Hillebrand who had served as WUCWO Treasurer General and Joan McGrath who had served as USA Representative to the WUCWO Board. We were delighted they were both with us for this meeting. We then quieted for a remembrance ceremony with a votive candle placed in front of Mary’s statue for the deceased members and Spiritual Advisors of each of WUCWO’s North American member organizations. Next, Father Stembler, Spiritual Advisor of the Friends of NCCW for WUCWO served as principal celebrant and homilist for Holy Mass with our other priests present as concelebrants. Beautiful music was provided by Bernadette Corso and Dr. Kimberly Hess. Mass was followed by the presentation of the flags and anthems of Canada and the USA, the WUWO North America Region countries. A new flag for the WUCWO NA Region joined the national flags on stage. We were delighted to receive letters of greeting from the Apostolic Nuncio to the US who extended the Apostolic Blessing to all present, from the Undersecretary of the Dicastery of Laity, Family, and Life, from the Bishop of Arlington, and the Chair of the Arlington County Board. In-person greetings from the President of the National Council of Catholic Women, the Supreme Lady of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary, and the President of the Friends of NCCW for WUCWO were interspersed with video greetings from the WUCWO President General, President of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada, and the Canadian Representative to the WUCWO Board. Videos were received from those outside the USA as the COVID pandemic precluded travel for our Canadian and Italian WUCWO sisters.

We then heard from our first speaker, Dan Misleh, Executive Director of the Catholic Climate Covenant who explored the first current WUCWO Resolution, A Healthy Planet Depends on All of Us. Following Dan’s informative talk, we prayed the Angelus and a Lunch Blessing after which we adjourned to the Luncheon Salon where we found Happy Birthday tiaras, blowers, and special placemats at each place and Happy Birthday balloons on each table that helped us to celebrate WUCWO’s 110th Birthday! After a delicious lunch that included birthday cake, we reconvened with prayer and continued our meeting. The next speakers addressed the three remaining WUCWO Resolutions. Molly Whalen, State Director, Capital Region for Best Buddies International spoke to the resolution, Care for the Family, Especially the Most Vulnerable Members. She was followed by Kathy Bonner who expounded WUCWO’s third Resolution, Elimination of prejudice and violence against women. The final WUCWO Resolution, Responding to Our Call to Holiness, was provided by Maribeth Stewart Blogoslawski, WUCWO Vice President General. Each speaker illustrated their talks with power point slides that captured the essence and complemented their presentations. We next heard an address from WUCWO’s President General by video which was followed by Table Discussion guided by a set of questions pertaining to the talks presented. After this session, we accepted a Final Declaration of this Conference by acclamation. Maribeth acknowledged our gratitude to the Friends of NCCW for WUCWO for their faithful support for this Conference and for WUCWO as well as for others who participated in this day. Father Stembler then led us in our Closing Prayer to Mary, Queen of Peace, Patroness of WUCWO. A lovely day of education, celebration, prayer, and fun was enjoyed by attendees of this Conference and was captured thought the service of a professional videographer and photographer.

WUCWO BOARD MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 2021

A two-day Board meeting was held via Zoom to learn updates from the Standing Committees (Finance, International, Statutes, and Communications) and Working Groups (Four Groups each addressing one of the WUCWO Resolutions).

In addition, the Board voted to postpone the Meeting with the Women of the Middle East to 2022 (from November 2021) and the next General Assembly to be held in Assisi, Italy to 2023 due to COVID travel restrictions.

Another notable item discussed was a new Decree from the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life which is the Dicastery (Vatican office) that oversees WUCWO. The Decree states that: 1) All major decisions made by an association that falls under the Dicastery’s oversight must be made by the members of the association. This does not change anything for WUCWO since the Board is the governing body and all changes to the WUCWO Statutes are adopted at General Assemblies following voting by member organizations’ delegates. 2) The term of office for a Moderator (which for WUCWO is the President General) cannot exceed ten years and there is no possibility of holding this office again. The WUCWO Statutes will need to be modified to accommodate this change. 3) The term of a member of the governing body (which for WUCWO is the Board) shall be 5 years with the possibility of renewing once for a maximum continuous time on the Board being 10 years. It will be possible for a Board member to serve again after a one term break in service. The WUCWO Statutes will need to be amended for this as currently, a Board member serves a 4-year term with the possibility of renewing twice for a maximum of 12 years. The Decree went into effect on 11 September 2021 and associations have 24 months from then to implement any necessary changes. These changes will not be drastic for WUCWO but were put into place because some other associations just don’t have any provision or inclination to change their president or governing bodies. The 24-month implementation period will allow for changes to be made to the Statutes at the next General Assembly slated for 2023 so there will not be any issues for WUCWO regarding this new Decree.

WUCWO/ HOLY SEE MEETINGS

The Embassy of France to the Holy See and the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organisations (WUCWO) held, in line with the Amoris Laetitia Family Year, an international conference by Zoom: The new pastoral style of Amoris Laetitia: welcoming, accompanying, discerning and integrating on 15 September 2021. The conference featured Oranne de Mautort, theologian and co-author of the book Familles, belles et fragiles! and Dr Gabriella Gambino, Undersecretary of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life.

A by-invitation only Zoom meeting was held on 16 September with the Dicastery of Laity, Family, and Life to discuss the philosophy behind the new Decree described above. I attended (though it began at 3am my time!) and enjoyed the discussions that were led off by His Holiness, Pope Francis, and that featured talks from theologians and from Dr. Linda Ghisoni, Undersecretary for Laity from the Dicastery. Linda had provided a lovely letter of greetings for our WUCWO NA Region Conference.

A meeting of the Vatican’s Working Group for Organizations for Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ Action Platform was held via Zoom on 14 September to discuss upcoming assignments and work to be done. As a co-chair of this Group, I was happy to attend.

UNITED NATIONS:

In- person attendance at the UN in NY is still prohibited due to COVID restrictions at least through the end of October 2021.

Accordingly, I have attended one session since our NCCW Convention on 7 September via Zoom at the invitation of the Office of the Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the UN. It was the High-Level Forum on the Culture of Peace on the theme “Transformative Role of The Culture of Peace: Promoting Resilience and Inclusion in Post-Covid Recovery.” The statement made by H. E. Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations was quite comprehensive and powerful. In essence, he stated:

COVID-19 has deeply impacted humanity on an individual and societal level. Families have lost loved ones, lock-downs have impoverished human relationships and interactions, disrupted economies, and inequalities have been further exposed and exacerbated. Now is the time to rebuild with an approach steered by peace and fraternity and with more resilience and inclusion than before. He went on to discuss this in terms of three areas:

Resilience and inclusion in human relationships: While we recover economically from COVID-19, we must also recover socially by rekindling and mending human relationships. As Pope Francis underlined, in his Encyclical Letter Fratelli Tutti, we need a recovery of kindness in everyday life.

Resilience and inclusion of the poor and vulnerable: The COVID-19 pandemic blatantly exposed the plight of the poor and those on the margins of our society; true recovery requires putting them first. Our inclusivity and, to a certain extent, our resilience can be measured by how our societies treat the poorest and those in vulnerable situations, especially in times of crisis. Only in respecting their dignity and valuing their contribution can they be truly integrated into society.

Resilience and inclusion of the environment: Finally, we must also reconsider our culture of consumerism and its impact on our common home. Our economic systems, production patterns, energy use, and how we live our daily lives can only be resilient if they are sustainable. The negative impacts of excessive consumption and most notably climate change, disproportionately affect the poor and those in vulnerable situations.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 8, 2021 /Christian Newswire/ — The National Council of Catholic Women, founded on March 4, 1920, celebrated their 100th birthday this year, delayed by one year due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Over 500 Catholic Women from across the United States of America, gathered in Arlington, Virginia to commemorate this special milestone.

Speakers for the 2020ne National Convention included Ana Lisa Piñon, Gloria Purvis, Most Reverend William Wack, CSC, and Elizabeth Tomlin. Presentations on spirituality, leadership and service provided information and resources for women to take to their home parishes and dioceses. Liturgical celebrants were: His Eminence Wilton Cardinal Gregory, The Most Reverend Michael Burbidge, The Most Reverend Oscar Solis, The Most Reverend William Wack, and The Very Reverend Miguel Gonzalez. Along with over 35 ordained Spiritual Advisors in attendance, the liturgy was additionally enhanced with music provided by Elias Charles Benn, cantor and Mark Jason Abel, accompanist.

Following the call of the 2018 pastoral letter of the United States Catholic Bishops, Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love – A Pastoral Letter Against Racism, NCCW members approved a resolution to heal our country and communities from the negative effects of racism, prejudices, and all types of discrimination.

The National Council of Catholic Women was presented with a proclamation from the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary, recognizing the continued partnership and shared mission to empower Catholic Women in serving God, to firmly support social justice and inclusivity, to prevent human trafficking, and to support victims of domestic violence.

NCCW’s mission is to act through its members to support, empower and educate all Catholic women in spirituality, leadership, and service. In 1920, there were more than 5,000 Catholic women’s organizations nationwide—organizations that would eventually become the first NCCW affiliates. The purpose, as described by the US Catholic bishops at its founding, was to give Catholic women a common voice and an instrument for united action—not to replace the work of any existing woman’s group but rather to stimulate their growth and unify them.

And so, in the same year American women earned the right to vote, the National Council of Catholic Women was born when nearly 200 Catholic women from around the country assembled on March 4, 1920 in Washington, DC, to unite and fortify their efforts in service to God and the Church! The NCCW mission is to support, empower, and educate all Catholic women in spirituality, leadership and service.

In the same year that American women earned the right to vote, the National Council of Catholic Women was born when nearly 200 Catholic women from around the country assembled on March 4, 1920 in Washington, D.C., to unite and fortify their efforts in service to God and the Church.

Washington, D.C. January 2020 – The National Council of Catholic Women continues decades-long tradition of participating in the annual March for Life as it convenes January Board of Directors Meeting

Active in the pro-life movement even prior to the infamous Roe v Wade decision that legalized abortion in 1973, the National Council of Catholic Women has always been a voice for the sanctity and dignity of every human person at every stage of life.

The January NCCW Board of Directors meeting took place in Washington D.C., January 25-26 allowing board members to participate in the historic 47th annual March for Life.

At the Board meeting, board members shared their vision for the future–presenting new resources and initiatives to engage Catholic women of all ages, encouraging them to deepen their spirituality, grow in leadership and meet the needs of today’s society through service. The Spirituality Commission produced and distributed a beautiful Centennial Prayer Card and unveiled an Hour of Prayer that will be announced soon on the NCCW website. The Leadership Commission is reaching out to first-time attendees of Convention and is producing a ground-breaking mentoring program. The Service Commission presented a “Friends with Pens” program in partnership with the Order of Malta, providing an opportunity for members to engage in prison ministry. Tessie O’Dea from Cross Catholic Outreach presented information on a Mission/Vision Trip to Guatemala for members of NCCW.

“The NCCW board expressed its fervent commitment to advocating for the protection of every person from conception to natural death, and to serving the Church through our unique mission to support, empower, and educate Catholic women in spirituality, leadership and service,” said Jean Kelly, NCCW President.

Washington, D.C. August 2019— Nearly 700 Catholic women from around the nation gathered in Atlanta to celebrate 99 years of service to the Church.

This year’s theme, Caring for God’s Creation, showcased NCCW’s continuing efforts to address important needs of our times through spirituality, leadership and service.

Mother Dolores Hart, O.S.B., was awarded the first Honorary Lifetime Membership Award of the National Council of Catholic Women, given to a distinguished American Catholic woman. As a young woman, she made her film debut with Elvis Presley in Paramount’s 1957 film Loving You. After starring in several Hollywood feature films and Broadway productions, she stunned the world with her decision to enter cloistered religious life. Now prioress of the Abbey of Regina Laudis in Bethlehem, Connecticut Mother Dolores remains a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences!

Keynote speaker, The Most Reverend Peter A. Rosazza D.D., Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus, Archdiocese of Hartford discussed women’s response to Pope Francis’s plea to save Mother Earth. Other speakers included Kim Michael Polote, Matt Holzmann, and Dan Misleh, founding Executive Director of Catholic Climate Covenant.

NCCW Commissions of Spirituality, Leadership and Service presented their efforts to combat human trafficking, their work on ways to respond to Pope Francis’s call to care for creation, and their new resources such as retreats for those mourning the loss of a family member to suicide.

2019-2021 NCCW President Jean Kelly was installed at the Closing Mass, along with 2019-2021 President-elect Patricia Voorhes, Secretary Tracy Janis, and the Leadership, Spirituality and Service Commission Chairs.

The Most Reverend Joel Konzen, Auxilliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, presided at the Opening Liturgy and The Most Reverend Jerome Listecki, Archbishop of Milwaukee, presided over the Closing Liturgy. Also present at the daily liturgies were the Most Reverend William Wack, CSC, Bishop of Pensacola-Tallahasee and the Most Reverend Peter Rosazza, DD, Bishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Hartford. 40 spiritual advisors were also present at the daily liturgies and attended the annual NCCW Spiritual Advisor luncheon.

The 100th anniversary of the NCCW will be celebrated at the 2020 NCCW Convention to be held August 26-29 in the Washington, D.C. area.

SUMMARY OF THE JUNE 2019 MEETING OF THE BOARD OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN

Many had arrived the afternoon and evening of Friday, 31 May, while the Executive Committee met. Greeting each other over supper, we had the pleasure of renewing friendships and catching up on each other’s lives.

Saturday, June 1, 2019

The meeting was called to order at 8:45am after which Father Dawson, Chair of the Spiritual Advisors, led us in an Opening Prayer. The normal opening procedure of the meeting then commenced with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the USA, Approval of the Agenda, Roll Call, and Approval of the Minutes from our meeting in January 2019.

Most Province Directors and Commission and Committee Chairs as well as the President-Elect, Jean Kelly, had submitted their reports previously which had been shared with the Board electronically prior to the meeting. We heard reports from the President, Maribeth Stewart Blogoslawski and Immediate Past President, Sheila Hopkins. These reports are on file and available, as needed.

Following her report, Maribeth, who also serves as our USA representative to the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organisations (WUCWO) and as Vice President General of that group, indicated that the Pontifical Council for the Laity, Family, and Life had requested that member organizations of WUCWO develop a policy for the protection of children and minors. Accordingly, Maribeth presented a proposed NCCW policy for the Protection of Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Persons. This policy was adopted by this Board of Directors on June 1, 2019.

Maribeth next gave a brief synopsis of the WUCWO Board meeting held in Rome from May 15-26, 2019. During that meeting, the WUCWO Board developed and adopted a 4-year work plan based on the resolutions adopted at the General Assembly held in Dakar, Senegal last October. They also enjoyed visits to the Dicasteries, Mass celebrated for them by Cardinal Ouelette at the Tomb of St. Peter, a beautiful retreat given to them by Cardinal Tagle based on Gaudete et Exsultate , and a group meeting with Pope Francis after the Wednesday General Audience during which Maribeth, as VP General, had the opportunity to speak with His Holiness. Rosaries blessed by the Pope were distributed to the NCCW Board members in attendance at this June Board.

We next heard a summary of the highlights of the Province Directors’ reports given by Secretary, Teresa Sarzynski. We were all impressed with the prodigious work that has been accomplished by our Province Directors and learned of best practices from each other from Teresa’s excellent summary.

A checklist is being developed for new A/Diocesan CCW Presidents and we added to the basic list that had been sent to Board members prior to the meeting. This checklist will ensure that a new diocesan president fulfills certain duties that will allow her to be in contact with National.

After an opportunity to discuss and comment upon the various reports, we proceeded to a review and discussion of proposed bylaw amendments sent to the Board by the Bylaws Committee. There were eight amendments proposed, all of which were approved by the Board of Directors. They include adding the NCCW Executive Director to the NCCW Executive Committee ex officio without vote, submission of proposed bylaw amendments to the membership 45 days prior to the Business meeting rather than the present 60 day notice, clarifying the Nominating Committee reporting process, submission of proposed resolutions to the membership 45 days prior to the Annual Business Meeting rather than the present 2 month notice, clarifying the duration of the break in service between terms for members of the nominating committee who wish to run again from stating that the break be for one complete election cycle rather than the current wording of 2 years break in service, and creating a membership category for ordained Spiritual Advisors.

Following a beautiful Mass in the chapel at the Washington Retreat House and a delicious lunch, we reconvened to discuss four proposed resolutions. Following refinements, all four were adopted and include resolutions on Suicide Awareness, the Opioid Crisis, Bullying and Harassment, and the Reuse of Products and Reduction of Consumption.

In the afternoon, we walked to Mary’s Garden that had been donated by the NCCW and is located behind the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, where our Spirituality Commission led us in the Joyful Mysteries of the new NCCW Rosary for Peace and Healing.

We were then free until dinner and many decided to visit an exhibit at the Mullen Library of the Catholic University of America where an exhibit celebrating the 100 ^th anniversary of the National Catholic School of Social Work was showcased. This was of interest because the NCCW was responsible for getting this school well established and we were happy to see much mention made of this.

After dinner at the Retreat House, we gathered on the front steps for a group photo.

Our first evening ended with a social hour and Evening Prayer.

Sunday, June 2, 2019

Following breakfast, we assembled in the meeting room at 8:45 to begin another day of work, prayer, and fun together.

We then discussed topics ranging from our website to our upcoming Convention that will be held in Atlanta from August 21-24.

We next drew the winner of the Convention Contest who will receive free registration and a 5-night stay at the hotel for Convention. Two more winners were drawn who will each receive a $100 credit toward items in our NCCW Store.

At 9:30am we gathered in the Chapel for a beautiful Mass after which we presented the Sisters of the Washington Retreat House with a lovely framed print of our NCCW patroness, Our Lady of Good Counsel with a small attached plaque that reads, To the Washington Retreat House with gratitude from the National Council of Catholic Women . During the presentation, the sisters who had been called to come stand in front of the altar, were thanked for providing a haven of peace and friendship for the NCCW Board for so many years. Father Dawson then extended a special blessing over the sisters.

Back in the meeting room, we watched a video tour of our NCCW Office in Arlington, VA. Many comments concerning our wonderful staff were made as they appeared in the video. We are indeed blessed with caring, lovely women who answer all our questions and fill all our requests in rapid time with competence and grace at our NCCW office. A perfect team!

Andrea Cecilli, Executive Director, then provided an update on our NCCW office and spoke about the 100-year history book being prepared. It will be a lovely volume full of information and photos. The inside front cover will be a photo of the 1921 Convention attendees and the inside back cover will be of those attending the 2019 Convention in Atlanta! Another good reason to attend…

We then heard Rose Martinet, NCCW Treasurer, give her report. The need for attendance at the 2019 Convention was stressed since we receive a good part of our operating budget from Convention revenue. Province Directors were reminded that in order to meet the Food and Beverage minimum required for hotel concessions such as the large meeting room at no charges, etc., it is important that the Province Dinners be held in the hotel as they count toward that F&B minimum. The Treasurer’s Report was accepted as presented.

We then broke into our Commission Working Groups where each spent much time finishing plans for their Convention presentations. We heard a summary of each group’s work at the Commission Plenary held at 3:30pm. Their Convention presentations promise to be filled with information and fun.

A brief session followed for discussion, Maribeth expressed her appreciation for all and for the work that our Board has accomplished during this term, and then the meeting was adjourned.

We enjoyed a lovely reception and dinner together and concluded with a beautiful Evening Prayer in the chapel.

This was indeed a time when a great deal of work was accomplished in the company of dedicated Catholic women who worked so well together because beyond being Province Directors, Commission Chairs, and Officers, they are bonded in true friendship. We worked, prayed, laughed, and cried together and will always treasure this time as one of grace and joy.

May Our Lady of Good Counsel ask her Divine Son to bless you, your families, and our National Council of Catholic Women.

After settling into the hotel, I ventured out to locate our new WUCWO office which is now at Piazza Ponte S. Angelo, 28. It was easy to find as it was just past the bridge that starts in front of the Castel S. Angelo. Crossing over the Tiber, one comes to the Piazza and the building was just to the left.

We began our Executive Meeting at 11:30 in the morning and discussed the agenda for the Board and accepted various assignments. It was here that I learned that the talk I had agreed to give with our Ecclesiastical Assistant, Father Whelan, on Laudato Si was to be livestreamed around the world! No pressure there!

The Masses and meetings were held in the same building as our new office as there is a lovely chapel and a large meeting room fitted with the latest translation and IT equipment.

The full Board first gathered for an Opening Mass that was planned by the Asia-Pacific Region. Following Mass, we moved to the meeting room for the formal opening procedures (Approval of the agenda, minutes, roll call, etc.) and then heard the reports from our President General, Vice President General, and Treasurer General. We approved the appointment of a new International Representative to the FAO where we lacked representation and approved the applications of two new member organizations from Italy and then went around the room to answer two questions: Why is it worthwhile to belong to WUCWO? and What is a useful personal characteristic to have as a Board member?

At 6PM, we had our first formation session that was live streamed around the world. These sessions are held to sensitize and enhance our knowledge of current Church events and documents. This first session, which I chaired as VP of North America, focused on the protection of children, minors, and vulnerable persons. The theme was taken from our WUCWO Resolution of caring for families, especially the most vulnerable members. Three experts on child protection spoke to us and we learned of particular cases of abuse, the difficulty in persons coming forward, and the need for compassion, openness, repentance, and clear directives on dealing with such cases. The Pontifical Council for the Laity, Family, and Life, which is the PC under which WUCWO is held, has asked each of WUCWO’s member organizations to adopt a policy concerning the protection of children. We shall address this at our NCCW Board meeting in June.

The next day, Friday, May 17, we prayed Morning Prayer together and then the VP for Latin America and the Caribbean chaired a session where the Vice President for each region gave a brief 7 minute summary of her region and the region’s work on each of the 4 resolutions adopted in Dakar at our WUCWO General Assembly last October. We then broke off into groups according to our regions to consider two questions: What can you offer and what do you need from WUCWO members? and How can you target new member groups? For North America, we decided we did not need anything specific but could share our resources and prayers with other member organizations. Since in the US and in Canada all women’s organizations are supposed to come under one umbrella organization so there should not be any other WUCWO member organizations from our countries other than those that presently exist, we decided to make a list of reasons why an organization would want to join WUCWO. After this part of the session, we reconvened and held the plenary for the regions where we learned of each region’s response to the questions posed.

Following lunch, the Vice President for Asia-Pacific chaired the session which was for our Working Groups. There are four working groups, each working on one of the new resolutions adopted at Dakar. The groups split off and worked on providing a list of concrete actions they would take to address each resolution. These actions were shared at the plenary session that followed. It was evident that in the developed countries, there were similar approaches and issues whereas in developing countries, the issues and ability to work on them varied widely. Each of these plenary sessions had as its aim to develop the Plan of Action that will govern WUCWO’s efforts for the next four years. The day ended with Mass in the Chapel led by the Europe Region.

The next day, Saturday, May 18, we met for Morning Prayer. The session was chaired by the Vice President for Europe. As we had addressed our Regions and Working Groups with an aim to developing the Plan of Action, it was now time to do the same with the Committees. There are four standing committees: International, Finance, Statutes and Procedures, and Communications, Information, and Publications. So, we split into our assigned committees (mine is International because of my work at the UN for WUCWO) and we each developed actions to take that were reported during the plenary session that followed. With this work behind us, we truly enjoyed an afternoon retreat given to us by Cardinal Tagle that was based upon Gaudete et Exsultate . The day ended with Mass celebrated in the chapel by the Cardinal and planned by the Latin America and Caribbean Region.

Sunday morning was free for the Board. I met with the President so we could go over some items. Everyone was free to attend the Pope’s Regina Coeli and blessing in St. Peter Square and it was lovely to do so, the Square being just ½ block from my hotel. The entire board reconvened at 4:30PM when we began preparation work on a new WUCWO video. Sentences and phrases from our responses as to why to join WUCWO were joined together to explain our structure, mission and purpose. Each member of the Board was assigned a phrase to say for the video, showing “the face of WUCWO.” This was a time to practice how all this would flow when it was filmed by a team from the Vatican Press Office the next day. Of course, we had a lot of fun doing this as people flubbed lines, acted like movie stars, etc.

At 6PM, the Vice President for Africa chaired a session where we considered additional elements for the Plan of Action not covered earlier, agreed that we would pursue possibly having a meeting with the women of the Middle East next year in Greece, agreed that we would participate in two seminars on microeconomics, one in Latin America and the other in Africa, continue our work on water provision, and learned of what would be required of WUCWO as a partner in the promotion of the cause of Pilar Bellosillo, a former WUCWO President General, for sainthood.

Early the next morning, Monday, 20 May, we caught taxis to San Calisto where most of the main offices (dicasteries) of the Holy See are located. We had lengthy meetings with the Dicastery for Integral Human Development and the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, with Mass being held at the chapel at San Calisto, organized by the North America Region.

In the afternoon, we returned to our meeting place and with the team from the Vatican Press Office, shot our new video. At 5PM, we had the second formation session to be live streamed around the world and this was on Laudato Si . This was in keeping with our resolution concerning a healthy planet depending on us all. I gave an introduction, some science behind the statements in the encyclical, 10 important points of the encyclical, the Pope’s statement that climate change and man’s impact on it are not optional beliefs as it is now Catholic Social Teaching, and then Father Whelan reiterated the high points of my part, spoke about Saint Francis, and then provided some philosophical aspects of Laudato Si . The day concluded with an ecumenical prayer shared with some English-speaking persons in Rome who are Anglican and Methodist. The choir led us in some beautiful praise together.

Tuesday, May 21, started bright and early with Morning Prayer after which we discussed and voted on the Plan of Action that will take us through the next 4 years. We then discussed and approved the budget and noted the importance of member organizations paying their dues on time. We all signed a confidentiality statement and were asked to make known the Campaign for a Minute of Peace. Father Whelan then gave us a brief power point talk on the three popes who did so much for the laity and whose tombs we were to visit later in the day: Saints John XXIII, Paul VI, and John Paul II. After lunch, we walked over to St. Peter Basilica where we had a special pass to go right in by a side door. We were free to go about the Basilica on our own or with small groups and we all visited the tombs of the Popes who were highlighted earlier in addition to some visiting the Treasury of St. Peters and all spent time marveling at the Basilica and praying. At 4:30, we gathered at a designated spot and were led down to the Tomb of St. Peter where Cardinal Ouellet said Mass for us. What a sacred moment! We were then free again until we gathered at the meeting building for our Cultural Dinner where we enjoyed delicious food and entertainment by our board members who sang and danced. So interesting to see the extravagance and flair of the Latin American dances, the joy of the African songs, and the haunting melodies sung beautifully by our Hungarian member. It was a fun evening where we all had a wonderful time together.

The next day, Wednesday, May 22, we met at the Porta Sant’ Uffizio very early as we had a special ticket that allowed us to have very privileged seats very close to the Holy Father as he gave his General Audience. Immediately following the Audience, the Swiss Guards led our WUCWO group to a certain area where we were arranged on three levels with the President and VP General in front. To our joy, the Pope walked over to us and greeted our President and me. What an amazing and moving time.

After this experience, the Board members bid each other farewell and safe travel as our time was officially over -but not for the Executive who had a meeting following this time together. That evening, when all was over, it was lovely to reflect on what an extraordinary thing it is for women united in faith from all over the world to come together in Rome to work on problems through united prayer and effort. Though we speak different languages and come from so many different cultures, we all bonded so quickly and so closely as sisters. This was indeed a most blessed time of work, spirituality, and fun.
